Massively multiplayer online role-playing games, or MMORPG, have taken the net by storm. Even those who don’t play them know someone who does. This gaming sensation has cropped up with such titles as World of Warcraft and Everquest, but these games demand a monthly fee. Fortunately, for those unable to or uninterested in paying monthly fees, there’s good news. There are a number of free online games for download. Most of these games have minimal system requirements and require no monetary investment.
Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO)
Designed by Turbine in conjunction with Wizards of the Coast, Dungeons & Dragons Online is based upon the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game (D&D 3.5 ruleset).
While this game came into the virtual world with a monthly fee, DDO went to the free to play (F2P), winning MMORPG.com’s best F2P game. Gamers interested in Dungeons & Dragons Online can download the game client and sign-up for an account completely free of charge.
Wizard 101 is a completely free, family friendly online MMORPG where players help to save wizard city from an evil wizarding force. With non-competitive combat, role-play and a plethora of fun mini-games available, Wizard 101 is one of the most user-friendly free MMORPG’s available. Taking pride in their fantasy story-based family fun atmosphere, this game is free to download and play.
Like many F2P formats, however, Wizard101 has a paying model available for those who enjoy the game. Monthly fees start at $9.95 for single players or $6.95 each for a family of accounts. Alternately, players can buy crowns (Wizard 101 currency) and pay by region.
A free online RPG developed by Gamania in conjunction with RedGate Games and Cartoon Network, this free MMORPG is a 2D game with big promise. Free to download and play, Hero108 is a quest based MMORPG with a simple user interface.
Combat is competitive, but simple, making Hero108 ideal for gamers of all age, though the games target audience is 13-16 year olds. As of last year, Hero108 was in Open Beta and downloadable by all players.
Not to be confused with Guild Wars, Clan Wars is a free, browser based MMORPG designed by Resitor Productions, LLC. Available for play on Facebook, or through the Clan War’s website, this fantasy game is a 2D MMORPG with three available classes and three playable races. No item mall or monthly subscription fee is required and Clan Wars will run on most systems.
